How to Write Ads For Your Business
If you wish to use email marketing or similar methods then you will need to learn how to write adverts for your business. The purpose of the advert is to get people to visit your main website so it needs to capture their interest.
A typical email advertisement is set out into three parts. Subject, Body and Link. The subject is the first thing people see when they receive your email, the body is the main description of your offer and the link is a hyperlink to your website.
* SUBJECT
The subject line (or headline) is the most important line of your advert because it needs to get people to want to read the rest of your email. You may have the greatest advert that makes even the most fearless of gurus whimper in their socks but with a poor subject line – no-one is going to read it.
There are two methods of getting your subject noticed. One is to create curiosity and the other is to create urgency.
The headline of an advert needs to create curiosity. We are telling people that we have something to share with them and they need to read our advert to see what. People are generally nosey and like to hear the latest gossip. People in England love to peek through the curtains and see what their neighbors are doing. Many of them have longer noses than Pinocchio.
Here are typical examples of headlines that create curiosity.
* Discover how I made $2000 a month
* Have you seen this new program?
* Let me tell you my “rags to riches” story
* See how this report can make you rich
As you can see, these headlines make people want to read the email advert to discover more. Now let’s look at examples of creating urgency.
* New Program! Jump in and be at the top!!
* Get this powerful money making report now while it’s still free!!
* Double credits for surfing today only. Don’t miss out!!
* Be the first to see this secret for free before I charge for it!!
Creating urgency is a popular marketing method because it strikes either fear or excitement into people. People love the chance to get in at the top of a new program and are excited about being amongst the first people to join it. This method also gets people scared about losing out if they don’t sign up for that offer today.
A good example of using the urgency method is the one time offer methods. People are told that they have one chance to get this mega offer if they buy it right now. If not it is gone forever and they will have lost their chance.
Many marketers use a friendly approach by inserting the name of the person they are writing to. This adds a more personal touch to the message. Programs like My Daily List Builder allow you to use a variable in your advert which converts to the prospect’s name when posted to the list. So for example...
* ~fname~, Look what I’ve got for you!
Assuming the first prospect to receive this mail is called Billy, the subject line will appear as…
* Billy, Look what I’ve got for you!
The mention of the prospect’s name catches their attention.
* DECIEVING HEADLINES
When people read your headline they expect your mail to be about the subject. Some people have used deceiving headlines in the past to trick people into reading their mail.
Here are some examples of deceiving headlines.
* You’ve got cash!!
* Problems with your PayPal account
* Commissions received, ready for collection
* Spam complaint received
If your mail has nothing to do with the subject or causes unnecessary panic then not only could you get banned from the program you advertise with but you also damage your reputation.
* BODY
The body of the mail continues from the headline. We have asked a question and now people want the answer. The body of the mail can create curiosity or urgency, it can explain the offer or it could tell a story. Here is an example of an email using curiosity in the headline and body with a story.
HEADLINE: Discover How I Made $2000 Last Month

So I decided enough was enough and I worked hard in my spare time to get what I wanted. A better life with no financial worries and the time to enjoy it. Now I am making a regular monthly income and I want to show you how I did it.
So, if you want to discover how I made $2000 last month and how you can do the same then click on my link below and discover how you can start a better financial future.

Notice how the headline creates that curiosity about earning $2000 a month. The body uses the story telling method because people do enjoy a story. It finally ends by using curiosity to get people to go to the main site. By this time you have the prospect’s full attention, they want to view your site and discover this $2000 a month secret.

Putting a time limit on something is a good approach because people have a habit of leaving that mail and deciding to check it out later. When they do that they are most likely to not bother and delete the mail later on. The urgency method is more likely to get the sale while you have someone’s interest.
Notice how this email lists various items of interest about the report? When you write an advert it is good to write down some key-points about the product to gain interest from the prospect.
Another good point is to ask questions. This involves asking the prospect a certain question and then giving them the answer. The following example aims to sell a Stop Smoking product.
HEADLINE: Do you want to stop smoking?
Hi,

Notice that this advert asks the prospect a question: “Do you want to stop smoking?” It then gives an answer in the form of the product “MustStop”. Now let's take a closer look at the next paragraph.
Let’s be honest, smoking is bad for you. It takes all your money, it makes your clothes and breath smell and it can cause lung cancer and even death.
By pointing out the problems associated with smoking it is making the prospect think about what you are saying and nod their head in agreement. Now they are keen to listen to you as you offer them the solution.
When we advertise to people we are giving them what they want. Therefore we need to discover what people want and then offer it to them.
Depending on the product you are offering you need to target people who want that product. If someone wants to learn marketing then offer them a marketing course. If they want to start a business then offer them a business.
Many advertising services allow you to target people who are interested in receiving information on certain subjects. So if you were offering a home business then you would choose that category or the nearest one to it.
* AD WRITING TIPS
Try and make your advert short and to the point. Some people don’t like to read long winded adverts. The purpose of your advert is to get people to visit your website, so provide just enough information to get them interested.
Proof read your advert, make sure it is well written with no spelling errors, good punctuation and that it states clearly what you are offering. Get feedback and testimonials from friends if you can.
Format your advert to be 65 characters long and turn off word wrapping in your word processer. This ensures your advert doesn’t go off the screen on some systems.
Use action words such as “Click Here” or “Get It Now”. Action words motivate people to perform an action such as clicking on your link to get to your website.
Hope this benefits you in some way, good luck.
